Dear Families; In an effort to support the cause for soccer, I wanted to let you know about the soccer programs that exist for your kids. Currently, there is a program through the Greenville Area Soccer Association that allows kids to play in-house soccer or traveling soccer. In-house teams are recreational. Soccer is encouraged to be fun and enjoyable and a learning experience for the players. In the traveling league, players have a pretty good understanding of the game and have developed skills necessary to play at a more competitive level. A child can play in the in-house program from the age of five to his/her senior year. Games are usually on Saturdays. There is usually one to two practices a week. A child may also choose to play in the traveling league. The travel league is for children ages ten to nineteen. Games are on Sundays. There are usually two practices per week. In addition, each travel team will compete in the PA West Open Tournament that is usually held in June. This tournament features teams from all over western Pennsylvania. Each travel team may also enter in a number of other tournaments such as the Flagship Cup in Erie, PA, the Sportsmanship Tourney in California, PA, or the Memorial Day Classic in North Huntingdon, PA. Both of these programs have been offered in the spring and fall. In the fall, the traveling program can only field teams in the under10's, under12's, and under 14's brackets because the older players are playing on high school teams in the fall season. However, in the spring it can field teams in the under 10's, under12's, under14's, under-16's, and under19's. What some of you might not know is that both boys and girls can play on traveling teams. Girls can choose to play on a boy's team or the girls have a league all their own. In the winter, the Greenville Area Soccer Association has an indoor soccer league for the traveling player. The games are played in Cortland, Ohio at Farmer Jim's Sports Complex, at the Family First Sports Complex in Erie, or in Neshannock at the Y Zone. Practice is usually once a week and there is one game per week. Players use the walls to play the ball and it's very fast paced. This opportunity is open to boys and girls from under10 to under19. There are usually three sessions: October to November, December to January, and February to March. A team can sign up for any and all sessions. Team registration fees and referee fees for each session are required. Soccer is a sport that can be played all year round. We have opportunities to play unlike other sports. Let's make our soccer players the best they can be by getting them involved in these programs. They will thank you for it Sincerely, Chad Gongaware
