Windows 95/98 Short-Cut Keys

Short-Cut Keys - Key Names:

Arrow Keys

Alt Key Alternate Key, located on either side of the Spacebar. [ALT]
Arrow Keys With the Num Lock off, the Numeric Keypad can also be used as Arrow Keys.
Ctrl Key Control Key, found on the bottom right and left of the main body of keys. [CTRL]
F Keys Function Keys, These keys are programmable in most applications. F1 is Help. [F#]
Menu Key Located below the right Shift key, this is the same as Right-Clicking with the mouse.
Numeric Keypad Used for typing in numbers quicker or doubling as Arrow and Page keys.
Page Keys [Insert] [0], [Delete] [.], [Home] [7], [End] [1], [Page Up] [9] and [Page Down] [3] keys. The second set is for when the Num Lock is off.
Windows Key Next to the [Ctrl] and [Alt] keys on the keyboard. Common key in most Windows Short-cuts.
[+]    This is used when keys are to be pressed simultaneously.
[-]     Signifying keys to be pressed in succession.

Common Program Short-cut Keys:

Copy Ctrl+C Copies the currently highlighted item.
Cut Ctrl+X Removes the currently highlighted item to be moved elsewhere.
Paste Ctrl+V Places the previously Copied or Cut item.
Print Ctrl+P Prints the current page. Few programs will print highlighted items.
Select All Ctrl+A Used to select all the text or the whole image for deleting or copying.
Undo Ctrl+Z Undoes (typically) only the last command preformed.
New File Ctrl+N Creates a new file.
Open File Ctrl+O Opens an existing file.
Save Ctrl+S Saves current file.
Help! F1 Brings up the Help window anywhere in Windows.

TIP: In menus when you see an underlined letter, rather then pointing on that command and clicking, type the letter that is underlined. Neat isn't it!

Windows Short-cut Keys:

NOTE: Many of the Common Program Short-cut Keys will also work in Windows. As with any key command, practice but be careful of what you do.

Alt Will give access to pull-down menus. Use arrow keys for navigation.
Alt+F4 Closes the current Program or Window.
Alt+F10 Pops up context menu. Same as Right-clicking with mouse. Same as Menu Key.
Alt+Tab Used for quick switching between applications or windows.
Alt+ESC Used for switching between open question or error windows.
Alt-Space-N Minimizes current window.
Alt-Space-R Restores Maximized or Minimized window to previous size and location.
Alt-Space-X Maximizes current window.
Ctrl+Alt+Del One press will open Task Manager Window
Two presses will reboot computer
Ctrl+Esc Opens up Start Menu. Same as Window Key. Will not work for Window Key Combinations.
Ctrl+Tab Moves between panes in a multi-pane window. Same as F6.
Ctrl+A Selects (highlights) all items in current window.
Ctrl+B Organizes Favorites in Win95/98 with Internet Explorer 4.x & 5.x
Ctrl+F Opens Find Window in Program, or Find File in Windows.
Ctrl+F4 Closes the current Document or Window in most Applications
Ctrl+W Closes Active Window
Menu Pops up context menu. Same as Right-clicking with mouse. Same as Alt+F10.
Window Opens up Start Menu. Same as Ctrl+Esc.
Window+Pause Opens up System Properties window.
Window+D Minimizes all open windows, also used to undo this command.
Window+E Opens Windows Explorer.
Window+F Opens Windows Find File.
Window+m Minimizes all open windows to display Desktop.
Window+Shift+m Undoes Windows+m command.
Window+R Opens Run Box.
F1 Help!
F2 Allows for renaming a file, folder, short-cut icon or program.
F3 Opens Find File from Desktop.
F5 Refreshes or updates contents in active window.
F6 Moves between panes in a multi-pane window. Same as Ctrl+Tab.
F10 Allows access to pull-down menus if Alt key is non-functional.
F11 In some parts of Windows, removes toolbars for larger viewing area.

TIP: If you wish to open a file and double-clicking doesn't seem to work, or it keeps wanting you to rename the file, do this. Highlight the file then press enter.

NOTE: These Short-Cut Key Codes were tested on Windows 95 (all versions) and Windows 98 (all versions). Many of these Codes will also work in Windows 3.x, Windows Millenium (ME), Windows XP and Windows 2000.
