Student Assistance Program

Mission Statement:

The goal of the SAP is to assist students to succeed educationally and to help them to deal with barriers that impede success. The need exists for schools to recognize risk factories related to substance abuse, depression, suicide, etc. The school has a role in addressing behaviors that may affect health, safety, and welfare of any and all students.

WHY Students may be referred to the SAP team:

	Those who violate the school's substance abuse policy
	Those who may be truant
	Those whose grades have been affected dramatically
	Those who may be experiencing depression or other mental health problems
	Any behaviors that may affect health, safety, and welfare of a student

WHO Can refer a student:

Any concerned...

	Teacher
	Administrator
	Student
	Coach
	School Employee
	Parent

HOW to refer a student to the SAP team:

1. Students may share concerns regarding themselves or a classmate

2. Parents may contact the school to share concerns regarding their son or daughter

3. Teachers will follow the referral process b y completing appropriate paperwork.

	Teams meetings are held weekly
	The SAP process does involve parent participation as an action plan is developed
	This program is voluntary; however, an intervention will take place if a school policy has been violated or students' health, safety, and welfare are in danger. School policy will be followed at that time.

The above team members have completed specialized training to identify, refer, intervene, and support students at risk.

Unless the student's health and/or safety is at risk, ALL team members are held to a confidentiality agreement and cannot release details about students who have been referred to SAP with anyone other than team members.

	Changes in mood or behavior
	Loss of interest in regular activities, such as hobbies and sports
	Lower grades and general lack of interest in school
	Secretiveness
	Decrease energy and motivation
	Overreaction to criticism
	Sudden weight loss or changes in eating habits
	Changing friendships
	Unclear Thinking
	Persistent headaches, stomach aches
	Anxiety, nervousness
	Sleeping problems, nightmares
